Once you have optimized your 5K, the transition to the marathon is not about changing your movement, but changing your duration.

  1. The 10K Phase (Months 4-6): Transition your Saturday Long Run to 15 miles. Keep the 1-mile TT on Mondays to maintain top-end speed.

  2. The Half-Marathon Phase (Months 6-12): Increase weekly volume to 40+ miles. Begin "Marathon Pace" (MP) blocks within your long runs.

  3. The Marathon Qualification (Year 1+): You are now ready to target a specific marathon. You have the aerobic base from the 10K/Half cycle and the lactate tolerance from the 5K speed work.

Nutritional Timing for Peak Performance

I follow a four-hour rule. Consuming a meal (high in complex carbohydrates and lean protein) four hours before training provides the necessary blood glucose levels without leaving the stomach full during high-intensity 400m repeats.
